Wishing You Happy Onam

Onam is the biggest festival celebrated in Kerala, India. It is also the State festival of Kerala with State holidays on 4 days starting from Onam Eve (Uthradom) to the 3rd Onam Day.

The festival falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug - Sep) and marks the commemoration of home-coming of the mythical King Mahabali.

It is the festival celebrated with most number of cultural elements such as Vallam Kali, Pulikali, Pookkalam, Onathappan, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal, Kummati kali, Onathallu, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Onapottan, Atthachamayam etc. Onam is reminiscent of Kerala's agrarian past, as it is considered to be a harvest festival.

People wear new clothes, exchange gifts with each other, decorate their homes to welcome the king, perform dance of Thiruvathirakali, play games, organize snake boat races, sports and prepare variety of dishes.

Eid-ul-Fitr Mubarak

Eid al-Fitr is a festival of breaking of the fast" is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm).

Fasting in Ramadan is not only abstaining from food but also from evil actions, thoughts and words. Ramadan is also a time for spiritual reflection and devoting themselves to worship and pray to Allah.

Ramzan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed as a fasting period by Muslims the world over who abstain from food and water during the period extending from 30 minutes before the sunrise to sunset.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the major Hindu festivals which is celebrated to mark the birthday of God Ganesha. Ganesh Chartuthi is observed in the month of August or September which is also the month of Bhaadrapada on the shukla chaturthi which is also the fourth day of the waxing moon. The festival lasts 10 days and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated to mark the birthday of God Ganesha. As per the legend, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha. Once Goddess Parvati, in the absence of Lord Shiva was going for a bath when she created Ganesha and asked him to guard the door while she bathed. Meanwhile, Lord Shiva was returning from his meditation and he wanted to meet his wife.

Lord Shiva was stopped at the door by Ganesha. In anger, Lord Shiva cut off Ganesha's head. When Goddess Parvati saw this, she got enraged and took the form of Goddess Kali and she threatened that she would destroyed the World. Afraid of her anger, everyone suggested Lord Shiva to think of a solution and calm Goddess Kali.

Every morning and evening, 'aartis' are done and Prasad is offered to Ganesha. In the end of the festival, the statues are immersed in the water bodies. The devotees sing songs and prayers in the name of Ganesha as the idols are carried to the sea and immersed.

The Ganeshotsav, the festivity of Ganesh Chaturthi, ends after 10 days on Anant Chaturdashi which is also known as Ganesh Visarjan day. On Anant Chaturdashi, devotees immerse idol of Lord Ganesh in water body after a gala street procession.
